Fitness in Your Forties

Used to play sports in high school or college but haven't trained for years? Looking to get back into a fitness routine after taking several years off?

FIRST, GOOD FOR YOU!

SECOND, for those of you over the age of 40 wanting to return to (or start) a fitness routine, keep a few things in mind.

Start slowly. Ease back into fitness incrementally to reduce the risk of injury. Start slowly during individual workouts too, by establishing a good warm-up. However, don't underestimate yourself, you can continue to achieve high levels of performance no matter your age.

Change it up. You are more vulnerable to overuse injuries so remember to cross-train. No matter what activity you are involved in, switch up your routine periodically. Hire a personal trainer every few months to help you rework your program. Schedule your workouts like you would schedule any other priority in your life and stick to them.

Mind old injuries. Take care of your body and any injuries you may have collected over the years. Pick an activity that you enjoy and that your body can perform successfully. Listen to your body and know the difference between pain and discomfort and remember, you need more time to recover.

Have fun. Find physical activity you enjoy and that fits into your busy schedule. Build a social support network with like-minded athletes of all ages and find a gym you feel comfortable at. Hire a personal trainer if you are intimidated or need a little help getting started. Join a group class, take dance lessons, or sign up for a local race!
